Creative Destruction : Why Companies That Are Built to Last Underperform the Market--And How to Successfully Transform Them

Description

Turning conventional wisdom on its head, a Senior Partner and an Innovation Specialist from McKinsey & Company debunk the myth that high-octane, built-to-last companies can continue to excel year after year and reveal the dynamic strategies of discontinuity and creative destruction these corporations must adopt in order to maintain excellence and remain competitive. In striking contrast to such bibles of business literature as In Search of Excellence and Built to Last, Richard N. Foster and Sarah Kaplan draw on research they conducted at McKinsey & Company of more than one thousand corporations in fifteen industries over a thirty-six-year period. The industries they examined included old-economy industries such as pulp and paper and chemicals, and new-economy industries like semiconductors and software. Using this enormous fact base, Foster and Kaplan show that even the best-run and most widely admired companies included in their sample are unable to sustain their market-beating levels of performance for more than ten to fifteen years. Foster and Kaplan's long-term studies of corporate birth, survival, and death in America show that the corporate equivalent of El Dorado, the golden company that continually outperforms the market, has never existed. It is a myth. Corporations operate with management philosophies based on the assumption of continuity; as a result, in the long term, they cannot change or create value at the pace and scale of the markets. Their control processes, the very processes that enable them to survive over the long haul, deaden them to the vital and constant need for change. Proposing a radical new business paradigm, Foster and Kaplan argue that redesigning the corporation to change at the pace and scale of the capital markets rather than merely operate well will require more than simple adjustments. They explain how companies like Johnson and Johnson, Enron, Corning, and GE are overcoming cultural -lock-in- by transforming rather than incrementally improving their companies. They are doing this by creating new businesses, selling off or closing down businesses or divisions whose growth is slowing down, as well as abandoning outdated, ingrown structures and rules and adopting new decision-making processes, control systems, and mental models. Corporations, they argue, must learn to be as dynamic and responsive as the market itself if they are to sustain superior returns and thrive over the long term. In a book that is sure to shake the business world to its foundations, Creative Destruction, like Re-Engineering the Corporation before it, offers a new paradigm that will change the way we think about business. From the Hardcover edition.

Nuyorganics : Organic Intellectualism, the Search for Racial Identity, and Nuyorican Thought

Description

The theory of Nuyorganics joins Nuyorican poetry to organic intellectualism. Examining its possibilities, this book questions existing theories of the dominant elite and offers new theories for those who struggle for accurate representation in their academic environments. It shows the importance of understanding that lived experiences are often undiscovered sources of expertise - and untapped resources for both teachers and students - in classrooms of higher education. Drawing attention to new ways of thinking, this book is a voice for those who have fought for a rigorous, socially just education to be the primary goal of any academic training.

Richard Rohr: Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality

Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality

Description

Only when the two come together, inner and outer authority, do we have true spiritual wisdom. We have for too long insisted on outer authority alone, without any teaching of prayer, inner journey and maturing consciousness. The results for the world and for religion have been disastrous.I offer these reflections to again unite what should never have been separated: sacred Scripture and Christian spirituality. From the Introduction In this exploration of central themes of Scripture, Richard Rohr transforms the written word, discovering in these ancient texts a new and vital meaning, relevant and essential for modern Christians. He uncovers what the Bible says about morality, power, wisdom and the generosity of God in a manner that demands a life-changing response from believers. Rohr offers his readers a Christian vision of abundance, grace and joy to counteract a world filled with scarcity, judgment and feara vision that can revolutionize how we relate to ourselves, others and the world."

[FREE] The Moon and the Bonfires pdf

Cesare Pavese,R W Flint,Mark Rudman: The Moon and the Bonfires

The Moon and the Bonfires

Description

Winner of the 2003 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize A NEW YORK REVIEW BOOKS ORIGINAL The nameless narrator of "The Moon and the Bonfires," Cesare Pavese's last and greatest novel, returns to Italy from California after the Second World War. He has done well in America, but success hasn't taken the edge off his memories of childhood, when he was an orphan living at the mercy of a bitterly poor farmer. He wants to learn what happened in his native village over the long, terrible years of Fascism; perhaps, he even thinks, he will settle down. And yet as he uncovers a secret and savage history from the war a tale of betrayal and reprisal, sex and death he finds that the past still haunts the present. "The Moon and the Bonfires" is a novel of intense lyricism and tragic import, a masterpiece of twentieth-century literature that has been unavailable to American readers for close to fifty years. Here it appears in a vigorous new English version by R. W. Flint, whose earlier translations of Pavese's fiction were acclaimed by Leslie Fiedler as "absolutely lucid and completely incantatory."

The essays in this volume analyze war, its strategic characterisitics and its political and social functions, over the past five centuries. The diversity of its themes and the broad perspectives applied to them make the book a work of general history as much as a history of the theory and practice of war from the Renaissance to the present. Makers of Modern Strategy from Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age takes the first part of its title from an earlier collection of essays, published by Princeton University Press in 1943, which The Moon and the Bonfires download book became a classic of historical scholarship. Three essays are repinted from the earlier book; four others have been extensively revised. The rest--twenty-two essays--are new. The subjects addressed range from major theorists and political and military leaders to impersonal forces. Machiavelli, Clausewitz, and Marx and Engels are discussed, as are Napoleon, Churchill, and Mao. Other essays trace the interaction of theory and experience over generations--the evolution of American strategy, for instance, or the emergence of revolutionary war in the modern world.

How to Deliver a Great Ted Talk: Presentation Secrets of the World's Best Speakers

Description

"How to Deliver a Great TED talk" is a complete public speaking system for delivering highly effective presentations and speeches. If you've watched TED talks before, you've no doubt been inspired and electrified by speeches by figures such as Sir Ken Robinson, Jill Bolte Taylor, Simon Sinek and Dan Pink. What makes these TED talks so inspiring? What is the secret formula for creating a successful TED talk? And how can you use this formula to deliver your own powerful TED talk (or any other presentation or speech, for that matter)? If you follow the guidelines and tools How to Deliver a Great TED Talk (previously published as "How to Deliver the Perfect TED Talk"), I guarantee that your audience will have no choice but to be wrapped up in your speeches and presentations. I studied more than 200 of the most inspiring TED talks, analyzed each one line by line and discovered the common elements that make them successful. This book is the result of my intensive research. In it, you'll discover tools that will help make you twice the speaker you are today in half the time. This book is also based on the work of bestselling authors Chip and Dan Heath. In their groundbreaking book, Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath revealed six simple principles for creating memorable messages. Donald McRae: Dark Trade: Lost in Boxing

Dark Trade: Lost in Boxing

Description

WINNER OF THE 1996 WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR PRIZE. In the early 1990s, Donald McRae set out to discover the truth about the intense and forbidding world of professional boxing. Travelling around the United States and Britain, he was welcomed into the inner sanctums of some of the greatest fighters of the period - men such as Mike Tyson, Chris Eubank, Oscar de la Hoya, Frank Bruno, Evander Holyfield and Naseem Hamed among them. They opened up to him, revealing unforgettable personal stories from both inside and outside the ring, and explaining why it is that some are driven to compete in this most brutal of sports, risking their health and even their lives. The result is a classic account of boxing that remains as fresh and entertaining as when it was first published 20 years ago. McRae approaches his subjects with wit, compassion and insight, and the result was a book that was a deserved winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year prize.

The Reflexology Manual: An Easy-to-Use Illustrated Guide to the Healing Zones of the Hands and Feet

Description

An ancient therapy used in China, Egypt, and India, reflexology provides effective, holistic treatment for both common and more serious disorders. According to reflexology, the hands and feet are microcosms of the body, containing points or zones that relate to individual glands, nerves, muscles, and organs. Reflexology harnesses the body's healing energy by stimulating specific pressure points on the hands and feet, alleviating the energy blocks that can cause pain or disability and restoring optimum health. In "The Reflexology Manual," the practical text guides the reader in mastering these self-help techniques, and color photographs illustrate a full reflexology treatment step by step. Full-color illustrations throughout. Detailed diagrams of pressure-point zones on the hands and feet. Clear explanations of how to work with the energy meridians. Ideal for beginners as well as experienced students of reflexology.

William Cook: One Leg Too Few

One Leg Too Few

Description

"One Leg Too Few" will feature an extensive range of fresh interviews, previously unpublished archive material and a wealth of information about the most creative (and explosive) double act that British comedy has ever produced. "One Leg Too Few" is a book about an extraordinary relationship: a friendship, a partnership - almost, at times, a marriage. Like a lot of marriages it ended badly, but for nearly 20 years, between the first date and the inevitable divorce, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were the funniest thing on three continents. "One Leg Too Few" is the story of that relationship, and the comedy that came from it.

What does the fire truck do? The return to holistic therapies is one of the most important developments in health over the past two decades. The Myth of Hitler's Pope: Pope Pius XII and His Secret War Against Nazi Germany

Description

Rabbi Dalin explodes the resurrected, widely accepted, yet bankrupt smearing of Pope Pius XII, whom Jewish survivors of the Holocaust considered "a righteous gentile." With devastating scholarship and unblinking honesty, he sets the record straight in a book that should shame haters of the pope, inspire conservative Christians, and sound a warning about the deep roots of Islamofascism.

When Ben's business card turns up in the pocket of a dead hit man, Ben and Pilgrim, two complete strangers, realize that they've been framed in an elaborate setup. Unsure who to trust--and pursued by a brutal and vengeful killer--the unlikely partners have no choice but to work together to discover who's targeted them for elimination--and why. But with everything at stake, Ben has no idea that Pilgrim is harboring some shocking secrets of his own--secrets that will soon force Ben to confront the blurred line between best friends and bitter enemies. He also Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore pdf takes the measure of Deleuze and Guattari's posthumous fortunes and the impact of their thought on intellectual, academic, and professional circles. In "Nobody Beats Us", David Tossell, who spent the '70s as a schoolboy scrum-half trying to perfect the Gareth Edwards reverse pass, interviews many of the key figures of a golden age of Welsh rugby and vividly recreates an unforgettable sporting era.

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore

Description

A Winner of the Alex Award, a finalist for the "Los Angeles Times" Book Prize for First Fiction, named a Best Book of the Year by NPR, "Los Angeles Times," and "San Francisco Chronicle" "" The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon away from life as a San Francisco web-design drone and into the aisles of Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. But after a few days on the job, Clay discovers that the store is more curious than either its name or its gnomic owner might suggest. The customers are few, and they never seem to buy anything instead, they "check out" large, obscure volumes from strange corners of the store. Suspicious, Clay engineers an analysis of the clientele's behavior, seeking help from his variously talented friends. But when they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, they discover the bookstore's secrets extend far beyond its walls. Rendered with irresistible brio and dazzling intelligence, Robin Sloan's "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" is exactly what it sounds like: an establishment you have to enter and will never want to leave."
